Fort Wilderness vs. Christmas at Home: Why An RV Rental is Extra Magical

by | Dec 3, 2024 | Camping, Florida RV Camping, Fort Wilderness Preferred RV Vendor, Places | 0 comments

Every year at Christmas, we have the opportunity to make memories with family and friends while embracing traditions. Many families opt for the familiar comfort of home, but there’s something truly enchanting about celebrating the holidays by Renting an RV at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Let me take you on a journey that might just convince you to trade your traditional Christmas setting for a magical Fort Wilderness Christmas!

I never thought I’d be the type of person to spend Christmas in an RV with my entire family. Seriously. Our family Christmas routine had always been so predictable before this; we’d gather in Moms adorned living room adorned with ornaments that held sentimental value from generations past and savor the comforting aroma of her famous cinnamon rolls filling the air throughout the house each year without fail.  But then came the year everything changed – the year we decided to trade our traditional Christmas for a wild adventure at Disney’s Fort Wilderness.

The Christmas We All Needed – In A Camper That We Rented

Let me be honest. The idea started as a joke. My husband had been obsessed with RV camping, and I’d been… well, resistant. “Who camps for Christmas?” I’d ask, rolling my eyes. But something was different that year. Our kids were becoming teens, the holiday routines were feeling stale, and we needed something fun to shake things up.

We Took A Leap of Faith And Booked A Camper

Booking an RV from Escape RV Rental, a preferred vendor of campers and RVs at Disney’s Fort Wilderness felt like we were rebellious teenagers breaking all the family Christmas rules. No elaborate table settings. No day-long kitchen marathons. Just us, a tiny space on wheels, and the promise of something different.

What I Didn’t Expect – An RV Christmas Miracle

Here’s the thing about an RV Christmas that no one tells you: it’s intimacy cranked up to eleven. In our tiny-square-foot home on wheels, there were not many rooms to escape to, no distractions. Just pure, unfiltered family time and the great outdoors.

Fort Wilderness provides a natural backdrop that no home decoration can replicate. Imagine sipping hot cocoa outside your RV, surrounded by pine trees dusted with potentially light Florida “snow” (or frost), with the peaceful sounds of nature as your Christmas soundtrack.

My teenage daughter, who typically would be glued to her phone, suddenly became our master decorator. We transformed our compact space with string lights, a miniature tree we’d picked up at a local market, and handmade paper ornaments that meant something to each of us. Every decoration told a story – unlike our previous perfectly curated home Christmas that felt more like a magazine spread than a real family moment.

Disney Magic: Not Just for Kids

Fort Wilderness isn’t just a campground. It’s like Disney sprinkled some of that magical pixie dust all over the place. The evening campfires? Pure magic. Imagine sitting around an open fire, roasting marshmallows, singing Christmas carols with festive strangers who quickly become friends. Our kids met other families, we shared stories, and suddenly the holiday felt less about perfection and more about connection. In fact, I learned that many campers plan their annual Christmas here or they come the weeks before Christmas and it is just as magical.

Unexpected Traditions – RVing At Fort Wilderness

Fort Wilderness offers more than just a camping spot – it’s a gateway to Disney magic during the holiday season. The resort goes above and beyond to create a festive environment that rivals any home holiday setup. There are holiday campfire singalongs and easy access to Disney parks. We started this hilarious tradition of decorating our golf cart. Mark went ALL OUT – lights, garlands, even a battery-powered rotating Santa. Were we those campy tourists? Absolutely. Did we laugh harder than we had in years? You bet.

The Practical Magic of RVing for Christmas

Our meals were simpler. Sometimes we’d cook together in our tiny RV kitchen, sometimes we’d grab food at the Disney restaurants. No stress, no impossible expectations. We ordered an Instacart delivery right to our campsite.

Let me break down some real talk about RV Christmas:

  • No massive cleanup after holiday hosting
  • Minimal gift wrapping (small space means minimal gifts!)
  • Reduced financial stress from elaborate home decorations
  • A built-in travel experience that doubles as a holiday celebration
  • Flexibility to create your own traditions

The Moments That Matter

On Christmas morning, watching the sunrise through our RV window, with pine trees and a soft Florida “winter” morning surrounding us, something shifted. We weren’t just observing a holiday – we were living it, breathing it, experiencing it together.

My son said something I’ll never forget. “Mom,” he whispered, “this is the best Christmas ever.” And he wasn’t talking about gifts or decorations. He was talking about us – truly being together.

A Note to the Skeptics

To anyone reading this and thinking, “An RV? For Christmas? No way!” – I was you. I was the queen of traditional holidays, of perfectly ironed tablecloths and meticulously planned menus.

But sometimes, the best memories come from the most unexpected places.

Over The Years

We’ve continued the RV Christmas tradition. Not every year, but enough to know that home isn’t about a perfect house or a picture-perfect setting. It’s about the people, the laughter, the shared moments.

Fort Wilderness taught us that. An RV showed us how to really celebrate Christmas.

And I wouldn’t trade that lesson for all the perfectly decorated living rooms in the world.

While staying home during Christmas has its comforts, spending the holiday in an RV at Fort Wilderness offers a unique blend of Disney magic, natural beauty, and family intimacy that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. It’s not just another Christmas vacation – it’s a new way of experiencing the most wonderful time of the year.

This Christmas, why not take a leap and create a holiday memory that will be talked about for years to come? Fort Wilderness awaits, ready to sprinkle a little extra magic into your family’s celebration.
